Listed buildings, Conservation Areas and National Parks require a sensitivity in both design and use of materials.  Care has to be taken to respect the original elements of the building or its environment to enhance not lose its original character.

This doesn't mean that important buildings or areas cannot be developed.  It is possible to obtain approval if you know what to leave and where you can be more adventurous.  Retaining and preserving what is important and building a good, honest relationship with the local officer is key.

As with all design the devil is in the details and knowledge of traditional construction methods helps any modifications look in-keeping and get approved.
